Self-updating and evolving bits of data were observed on the still-fledgling network at the beginning of the 1980s. While not an immediate threat, the engineers' inability to delete them outright caused enough frustration that a solution was developed and deployed with little testing beforehand: dubbed the Yggdrasil Protocol, the program was meant to evolve alongside the anomalous data and ensure they have no interactions with the wider network. It backfired spectacularly.

Those anomalous bits of data were dubbed Digimon - portmanteau of Digital Monster - when they began to realise into the human world and wreak havoc, forcing humanity into figuring out counter-measures for the catastrophe.

It has been thirty years since Digimon first realised into the human world. Measures have been put in place to both track realisations and deal with realised Digimon - DATS was founded for those precise reasons. The situation is mostly under control, though many mysteries still surround Digimon and their relationship with humanity.

DATS

The Digital Accident Tactics Squad - abbreviated as DATS - is a governmental body dedicated to safeguarding society against dangerous Digimon. Its primary tactic involves deploying agents to defeat Digimon and turn them back into DigiEggs, which can then be safely sent back to the Digital World.

Agents

Humans with Digimon partners who work with DATS.

Resonance

The process by which a DigiEgg will choose a human and realise into the human world. The inner workings of this process are still unknown.

Realisation

The process by which Digimon will cross from the Digital World into the human world. The inner workings of this process are still unknown.

Psychology

Virgil is only considered an easy man to get along with until he opens his mouth. Blunt and lacking any tact and unwilling to change that to boot - he will not compromise on his ideals, but thankfully it does not take long for everyone around him to realise Virgil is as stubborn as they come. It is not so much that he wears his heart on his sleeve as much as he aggressively wants those around him to believe him to be a certain way. It helps him, he found, because it keeps people away without antagonising anyone.

Those few who are not immediately put off by Virgil's outwardly demeanour are then usually put off by the man's complexes. A superiority complex with traces of a martyr complex. The former is the worst offender; having lived a thoroughly unpleasant childhood, Virgil's coping method of choice early on became to find strength in the misery, soon after evolving to believing himself superior to those around him who lacked his outlook on life (a generally cynical outlook) because they did not suffer as he did. The martyr complex is more subtle, showing in Virgil's tendency to victimise himself in hopes of garnering sympathy.

A staunch believer in law and order, Virgil's stubbornness stops as soon as the law begins. While not meek he is subservient to authority, believing society as whole should prioritise functionality over individual feelings. Perhaps surprising, Virgil shies away from leadership roles, having the self-awareness to acknowledge his own lack of skill in the field. Not that it stops him from criticising others' work, however.

Biography

Realistically, Virgil realises when he thinks over his existence, his father's affair could have gone one of three ways: the woman he cheated with kept the baby and raised him alone with no support, the woman he cheated with dumped the baby at an orphanage, or his father took the baby out of obligation despite the fact doing so would have catastrophic implications for his own family. For better or worse, Virgil's father - after an affair - ended up choosing to keep baby Virgil while his biological mother disappeared - likely to avoid public scrutiny.

Virgil's father is a powerful man. A known lobbyist for an aviation company with a brief political career behind him, he could never quite leave the media's eyes but rather welcomed them into his seemingly perfect life, openly showing his equally-successful wife and three children as though they were trophies. The image of perfection. What went through his mind when he decided to risk it all for an affair is beyond anyone's understanding. The man impregnated a woman other than his wife and thus Virgil was brought into the world.

Nobody wanted him, that much was clear from the beginning.

His father and step-mother's relationship began falling apart (or maybe had been for a while, Virgil cannot know for certain) and Virgil's step-siblings never wasted a chance to remind him of how much better things were before he showed up. They were vicious but subtle about it. Virgil was never outright abused - he enjoyed the privileges of wealth as much as his step-siblings - but he was incessantly excluded by his family, made to feel like a stranger in his own home. Outside the home things were not much better. Living with people who ought to love him but only acknowledged his existence when necessary was not ideal for a developing psyche. Virgil had no idea how to interact with his classmates, becoming overwhelmed whenever anyone spoke to him and either lashing out angrily (believing that they were going to make fun of him) or coming off as desperate for friendship.

By his teenage years he had more or less abandoned any hope of... Anything. Virgil grew up disillusioned. He spent his free time alone and all that solitude only reinforced a budding belief that he was a notch above average because, he reasoned, how many could go through what he did and come out with a head held high? Pride began budding within him. And it was exactly that pride that led him to walk out of his parents' mansion at eighteen and severing all ties to that life of luxury.

Unfortunately for him, Virgil found that a life of economic stability had greatly skewed his perception of what being independent would be like. In other words, he struggled.

Virgil worked just about every job his lack of qualifications allowed him to and ultimately the one that he stuck with was as a dishwasher for a restaurant. He had more or less accepted that life did not get better than that - and just as he did, he resonated with a Digimon. The DigiEgg found its way to him only minutes before DATS were at his doorstep.

The whole ordeal was the first time in years Virgil had felt anything aside from disinterest. He wanted to work with DATS, though his knowledge on Digimon was limited and his experience with them even more so, he felt compelled to have them hear out his case: he had the aptitude necessary to resonate with a Digimon, the resolve to put his life on the line if necessary, and the willingness to learn and train and do whatever it took to be accepted. In front of such display, how could he have been turned down? Besides, the baby Digimon that hatched soon after had taken an immediate liking to Virgil.

So Virgil began working at DATS with his partner, Elecmon. Nobody is quite sure how the two maintain such a high success rate given their clashing personalities, but regardless, they have become model employees the rest of the teams look to enviously. And maybe it is for the best that the rest of the organisation looks at them from afar, because nobody who has worked directly with Virgil has many positive things to say about him (and maybe a bit more about Elecmon). But it does not matter to Virgil. His focus is solely on protecting humans from renegade Digimon and those that use them; he does not believe anyone else could be more capable than him at it.

Connections

Colleague same district

The other DATS agent working in his same district, Virgil does not hold Celeste in much regard, often thinking her to be naive and incompetent. His opinion became a bit more positive through the months of working alongside her - it does not show in their interactions, however. At least Virgil finds solace in the fact Celeste leaves him his space.

DATS superintendent

Virgil is not one for openly showing admiration but he makes an exception for the lieutenant. Though their interactions are infrequent, he is always pleased to spend time with Vaughan; it seems mutual too, as Vaughan has more than once asked Virgil to dismiss honorifics when adressing him (something Virgil struggles with) and, more importantly, personally commended Virgil's work. It can be argued that Virgil's attachment to lieutenant Vaughan stems from his desire for a positive father figure - Virgil would angrily deny such claims, however.

DATS scientist

Already unpopular with the vast majority of DATS, it is no wonder Virgil too wants nothing to do with Lua Steadman. He finds her unbearable and their interactions are characterised by sarcastic, dry exchanges. As far as dr. Steadman's work is concerned however, Virgil does believe her to be good at her job and a valuable asset. He just wishes her brilliant mind could have been paired with a less abrasive personality.

Family step-siblings

To say Virgil dislikes his step-siblings is not so much an understatement as it is innacurate - Virgil goes through his life without ever thinking about them. Out of the three, Gregory and Catherine have historically been the less hostile towards him (no doubt due to the large age gap between them and Virgil). On the other hand, Zara is still resentful towards her younger brother and wastes no opportunity to make that resentment known - to her dismay however, Virgil does not react to provocation.

Trivia

  • Routinely consumes media (especially books) he dislikes for the sole purpose of criticising it
  • Has a lot of respect for food industry workers ever since working as a dishwasher
  • Uncharacteristically competitive when it comes to claw machines - believes he can figure out the strategy if he just keeps trying a little longer
  • On some subconscious level enjoys fighting: the adrenaline, the feeling of control, the ability to let loose... Not that Virgil would ever recognise it, or even less admit it

Cocky, confident and hot-headed - Elecmon is lucky he has the strength to back him up. He is not one to follow authority and, if anything, would rather make a display of how little he cares about teamwork. Thankfully for Virgil, this side of Elecmon is (mostly) for show: so long as his goals align with those of his partner, he will work with diligence. Never losing his rebellious streak, however.
